When Spider-Man: Homecoming released in 2017, the movie confirmed Tony Stark/Iron Man had actually sold Avengers Tower. Just who bought the property has remained one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest mysteries, and a lot of fan theories speculate that the new owners will actually be the Fantastic Four. Now, Marvel Studios producer Trinh Tran has addressed those fan theories.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Tran was asked when fans would find out to whom Tony sold Avengers Tower. Tran turned the question around on the interviewer, asking if he had any theories, and he brought up the idea that Avengers Tower may become the Baxter Building -- which is the headquarters for the Fantastic Four -- in the future.
After saying she loves to hear fan theories like that, Tran said, "We'll see if it sort of fits into where it can be headed towards." While the answer definitely does not confirm that Avengers Tower will become the Baxter Building, Tran also doesn't explicitly deny that possibility.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four first appeared in a self-titled series that began in 1961. The team, which has had a number of different members over the years, generally consists of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Thing/Ben Grimm. The group gets their powers after being exposed to cosmic rays during a space mission.
The film rights to the Fantastic Four didn't belong to Marvel for several decades, with Constantin Film and 20th Century Fox putting out their own projects. Those films met with varying degrees of critical and financial success. The most recent Fantastic Four movie, which was released in 2015, received negative reviews and is generally considered a box office bomb. Finally, in 2019, Disney acquired key assets from 21st Century Fox, resulting in Marvel Studios regaining the rights to the Fantastic Four.
Soon after Marvel Studios regained the Fantastic Four, the studio announced a new film starring the team. At this time, there is no casting information available for the film. However, Jon Watts -- who has directed all three MCU Spider-Man films -- is slated to helm that project.
The next Marvel Studios project set for release is Hawkeye, for which the aforementioned interview was publicity. Starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, Hawkeye is set to premiere Nov. 24 on Disney+.
