Marvel's FCBD Avengers Comic Teases a New 'Deadly Version' of the Team

Marvel Comics' Free Comic Book Day Avengers comic will not only get fans ready for the highly-anticipated Avengers: Endgame, but also introduce "one of the most dynamic, and deadly versions of the Avengers ever."

Writer Jason Aaron and artist Stefano Caselli will continue the story Aaron has set up during his Avengers run, while writer Gerry Duggan and artist Mike Deodato reveal what this new deadly version of Earth's Mightiest Heroes will look like.

The FCBD Avengers #1 cover by Ed McGuinness features Captain America, Black Panther, Thor, Ghost Rider, Hulk, Captain Marvel, Iron Man and the newest Avenger, the vampire hunter Blade. Readers saw Blade's recruitment in a backup story in Avengers #10 when Wasp, an Agent of Wakanda, rescued Blade from Castle Dracula in Romania. Upcoming issues will see the team assemble to neutralize a brewing vampire civil war.

As for what Duggan and Deodato's team could be, that is a mystery for now. Black Panther's Agents of Wakanda replace S.H.I.E.L.D. and serve as the support staff for the Avengers, but no one would ever mistake them for a team of killers. Marvel previously published a Dark Avengers comic starring villains masquerading as the heroes. Led by Norman Osborn as the Iron Patriot, the Dark Avengers included Bullseye as Hawkeye, Venom (Mac Gargan) as Spider-Man, Moonstone as Ms. Marvel and Daken as Wolverine.

Whether something similar is in play here remains to be seen, but FCBD Avengers #1 could result in a new Avengers spinoff title.

FCBD Avengers #1 by Jason Aaron, Gerry Duggan, Stefano Caselli and Mike Deodato will be available for Free Comic Book Day 2019 on May 4.
