The Back to the Future franchise has helped to define an era of film that captured the fun and wonder of science fiction and the heart of the '80s. But the series also took a cosmic concept, such as time travel, and created a human story about family and consequences. Through Marty McFly, audiences could learn that sometimes changing reality can work for the best, but other times, taking more than needed could lead to dangerous consequences.

Back to the Future Part II was a huge focus on that lesson and saw Marty McFly travel to the future of 2015, where cars could fly, energy was cleaner, and the past was celebrated with a sense of novelty. Since Marty's past from 1885 to 1985 is accurate to the real world, it begs the question of why the real world's 2015 didn't result in the same one Marty encountered. But a new theory from Reddit user PastorBlinky posits that this was because Marty was the reason his 2015 became a reality.

In Back to the Future Part Part II, Marty McFly's 2015 was far from perfect. While the world he lived in was ideal for anyone, his home life was anything but, as his choices in 1985 defined his future, where he would ultimately be unemployed and deal with an injury that kept him from playing the guitar. Nevertheless, Marty's family was still happy, including his mother and father, the main reasons the franchise even happened. But it was because of his parents that Marty had also created this future. Nevertheless, there could still be a catch, explaining why his 2015 wasn't like the real 2015.

It had already been confirmed that Marty had the potential to create an alternate reality where his 1985 would end in ruin with his father dead and his mother married to Biff Tannen, now a millionaire. As a result, it could be that Marty's future was also a pocket reality created by the choices he made in 1955 and 1985. If so, it would mean that the 2015 of the real world resulted from the reality shown at the start of the first film. But how did Marty's effect on his loved ones change the world's future for the better?

Back to the Future Marty and George McFly

Marty's impact on the future was likely due to the two people he spent the most time with in 1955. The first was his father, George, who was creative and ambitious but incredibly timid. Thanks to Marty, George could finally fight for himself and the things he wanted, which allowed him to win over his future wife, Lorraine. The theory would then go into how history has shown that science fiction and entertainment could impact the growth of the world. In addition, George's contribution to science fiction allowed the world to come up with newer ideas that would be seen in 2015.

Marty's other huge contributions included inspiring Doc Brown and even starting his time travel experiment even sooner, now that he'd seen his dream in action. As a result, Doc would later be able to develop a time-traveling train that showed how he planned to see all the possibilities of time and space. In doing so, he could even bring technology from the future to help create a 2015 similar to what was in Back to the Future Part II. So while his future will always be in flux, even when things aren't known, it's highly likely that Marty's earliest contributions created a future that may still be like the 2015 he saw, but even better.
