Martin Scorsese Developing Gangs of New York TV Show

A Fargo television series is already in the works, so why not a Gangs of New York one as well? It’s being reported that Martin Scorsese, who’s already proved he’s adept at television in Boardwalk Empire, is teaming with Miramax to develop the movie for the small screen.

According to Variety, Gangs won’t be set solely in New York, and will expand to cities like Chicago. As the site points out, this could make it a prequel of sorts to Boardwalk Empire. The expanded settings are nice way of explaining why Gangs of New York the TV show (likely) won’t have the same cast as the 2002 movie.

“This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film,” Scorsese said in a statement. “A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.”

Miramax chairman Richard Nanula added, “No one better exemplifies what the new Miramax is and will be better than Martin Scorsese. His dedication to quality and the art of storytelling continues to excite everyone that works with him and watches his films and television programs. We could not think of a better partner for this project than the creator of the wonderful film on which it is based.”

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cameron Diaz, Gangs of New York told the story of the war between crime boss Bill “the Butcher” Cutting and the leader of the Irish Catholic immigrants, Amsterdam Vallon. The movie was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but won none.
