Married... With Children originally ran for 11 seasons on Fox. The sitcom takes place in Chicago and follows Al Bundy (O'Neill), a high school football player turned women's shoe salesman. He's married to the lazy Peggy Bundy (Sagal) and has two children, Kelly Bundy (Applegate) and Bud Bundy (Faustino). The former is a notable example of the "dumb blonde" stereotype, while the latter is snarky and intelligent. Originally, their next door neighbors were Marcy and Steve Rhoades. However, after the two of them divorced, Marcy married Jefferson D'Arcy and took his last name.

During its run, Married... With Children was notable for its raunchy sense of humor and is one of the longest-running live-action sitcoms ever. Married... With Children has been parodied in various animated series, including Futurama and The Simpsons.

The latter two of those three shows received backdoor pilots but were not picked up. Top of the Heap, which starred Friends' Matt LeBlanc and Joseph Bologna, ran for seven episodes on Fox in 1991. The show focused on Charlie Verducci (Bologna) and Vinnie Verducci (LeBlanc), two minor characters on Married... With Children.

Deadline notes there were previously talks about a Married With... Children revival six years ago. However, that revival never came to fruition due to the busy schedules of the cast. Sony Pictures Television has been working on the animated project for more than a year.

Following the end of Married... With Children, O'Neill played Jay Pritchett on Modern Family, another long-running sitcom. Sagal went on to play Leela on Futurama as well as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy. Applegate has had roles in a number of projects, including Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Dead to Me. Faustino went on to voice Mako on The Legend of Korra.
