Late last year, it was revealed that actor Mark Strong had signed on to play a character in the upcoming DC Comics' movie Shazam!. Though unconfirmed at the time, his casting implied that he'd be playing the film's villain, Doctor Sivana.
This past weekend, at the premiere of Cirque du Soleil in London, Strong confirmed he is indeed cast in the DC film's villainous role, describing Sivana as an "evil bastard...they are always the best characters to play, the most fun."
In the comics, Sivana is the archenemy of Shazam. An inventor with a genius intellect and skilled at manipulation, the character has been a thorn in the hero's side for decades. Strong says he's been trying on harnesses for the stunts, and is pretty convinced he'll do plenty of flying and shooting lightning out of his hands.
Strong is no stranger to comic book movies; though he's perhaps best known for playing Merlin in Fox's Kingsman franchise, he had a brief stint over at DC playing Sinestro in 2011's Green Lantern. Strong himself thinks the film was good, and feels like he's got a chance to be even more evil in Shazam!, as part of his "unfinished business in the DC world."
Arriving in theaters on April 5, 2019, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Faithe Herman, and Cooper Andrews.
