Writer Mark Millar will be joined by artist Oliver Coipel for The Magic Order, the first Millarworld comic project to be published by Netflix. Combining elements of fantasy and crime thrillers, the six-issue series follows five magical families who must face a new threat to their survival.

"So my idea with The Magic Order was to take something that’s essentially about a secret order of good wizards who got rid of all the bad things hundreds of years ago, but live quietly among us now with blue-collar jobs and ordinary domestic lives," Millar told Entertainment Weekly. "They have this secret life, but to the outside world it’s all very normal and it makes the idea look more like The Sopranos than Lord of the Rings."

The news arrives three months after Netflix acquired Millarworld, the comics imprint founded in 2013 by Millar, the co-creator of Kick-Ass, Kingsman and Wanted. Under the terms of the deal, Millar will develop properties for television and film, and publish new comics under the Netflix banner.

When it came to working with Coipel, Millar said other commitments have kept them apart. However, the lure of Netflix was too much to pass up. "Olivier is probably the best artist working in comics right now," Millar said. "I’ve been trying to get him for almost 10 years, but he just kept re-upping his deals elsewhere and I couldn’t get my hands on him. But Netflix is very persuasive. This is where everyone wants to be right now, and he’s as excited as I am about drawing this."

The Magic Order will debut in spring 2018.
