Star Wars actor Mark Hamill recently rewatched his original audition tape for the role of Luke Skywalker as part of a fundraising effort for Omaze. In the video, Hamill provided commentary of his performance, as he recounted memories of meeting Harrison Ford, his first impression of Carrie Fisher and the fact he thought Han Solo was the main character of the film.

Hamill recalled approaching Lucas just before his audition took place to ask about the tone of the movie, curious as to whether the film was a tongue-in-cheek parody of Flash Gordon. Lucas apparently responded, “Let’s just shoot it and we’ll talk about it later,” which Hamill clarified meant: “Let’s just shoot it and we’ll never talk about it later.”

Hamill also paused the video when he referred to Han Solo as “Hans.” He shared how the pronunciation of Han Solo and Chewbacca were apparently hot topic issues for the actors on set, though Lucas wasn’t bothered by their concerns. He allegedly instructed them to pronounce them however they wanted to, and the explanation would lie in their “regional” accents.

As far as Hamill is concerned, Carrie Fisher was the final piece of the puzzle: “She was effortlessly feminist. She wasn’t some shrinking violet that needed a guy to come rescue her. In fact, she made Han and Luke look like chumps! She was anything but what I expected. I sort of thought, ‘Well, she’s 19.’ That’s barely out of high school, and in many ways she was a lot older and wiser than I was.”

Having read the lines for the audition, he believed that Han was the main character of the movie and that Luke was his sidekick. It wasn’t until he opened up the script having got the role and saw the main title page that he realized this was Luke’s story. “I thought he was Captain America, and I was Bucky," he explained. "So when I eventually got the script, it said: ‘The Star Wars: The Adventures of Luke Starkiller as taken from the Saga of the Whills,’ I realized ‘Oh my gosh, it’s through my eyes!’”
