Mark Hamill Once Told Arnold Schwarzenegger to Ditch His Accent... and His Last Name

Mark Hamill in The Last Jedi

Mark Hamill, star of The Last Jedi, revealed to the Twitterverse on Saturday that he once encouraged another iconic actor to make some significant changes to his voice...and his name.

“Arnold Schwarzenegger asked me for advice when he was just starting out,” Hamill tweeted. “I told him to lose his accent for a wider range of roles and to change his last name since no one could pronounce it. He did the opposite and became one of the biggest stars EVER.”

The Terminator actor and former governor of California appears to have taken Hamill's anecdote with a sense of humour.

In response to Luke Skywalker's alter ego, Schwarzenegger posted his own tweet not long after Hamill shared the story, replying with, "Your advice was absolutely correct under any normal circumstances, and those were the rules back then. I just happen to be a rule-breaker."

Both actors have gone on to achieve legendary success with their respective blockbuster series, and neither seem to be slowing down just yet. While Hamill, 66, has been somewhat coy about his future with the Star Wars franchise, the 71-year-old Schwarzenegger is proving that some rules are made to be broken, recently confirming that he is currently filming a sixth Terminator film, expected to hit theatres in November 2019.
