Mark Duplass has played a variety of roles over the course of his acting career, but we’ll see him delve into perhaps is most intense subject in the upcoming Kathryn Bigelow action thriller Zero Dark Thirty. The movie details the decade-long search to find, and eventually kill, Osama bin Laden, and Duplass teased that it’s going to be just as intense as it sounds.
“It’s the film I’m most excited to see this year despite being in it,” Duplass told Spinoff Online at Los Angeles premiere of The League. “I believe in Kathryn Bigelow. She takes a naturalistic approach to the political thriller genre and makes it human. It’s a very, very exciting movie about something that we all know about, and it happens right here [holds hand up to face] on the faces of the people involved, and it’s special.”
Duplass’ fantasy football comedy The League premieres its fourth season Thursday on FX, and we commented on how different it is from Zero Dark Thirty.
“I will say this: These are the two most different projects I’ve ever been a part of, tonally, structurally, everything,” he said, adding, “Everyone who’s on the movie signed a non-disclosure agreement for Zero Dark Thirty, so I’m not allowed to say anything or else I literally might get sniped, or you or any of us.”
As to whether Zero Dark Thirty will act as a fitting follow-up to Bigelow’s Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker, Duplass said, “I think it is, yeah. Very much a stylistic similarity to [that] film.”
Formerly referred to as Kill Bin Laden, the action thriller has been at the center of a political firestorm in which opponents have accused the Obama administration of giving the filmmakers access to classified material. Bigelow has denied any favoritism, while screenwriter Mark Boal is adamant that Zero Dark Thirty focuses on the people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to take down the terrorist mastermind rather than the president who gave the order.
The film, which opens Dec. 19, also stars Jessica Chastain, Joel Edgerton, Mark Strong, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Harold Perrineau and Edgar Ramirez.
