In Nintendo's Super Mario franchise, the main character is usually pretty quiet, often communicating with shrugs or, at most, high-pitched expressions of surprise. But Mario does occasionally speak, and he's usually voiced by actor Charles Martinet.

For the past two decades, one Mario soundbite has cased immense debate between Nintendo fans everywhere. No one's been able to precisely make out what the plumber says to Bowser after he defeats his rival in Super Mario 64.

However, Martinet finally cleared up the confusion over what Mario said on Twitter.

According to the actor, Mario says "So long, Kinga Bowser" as he watches his enemy sail away through the sky, tossed by the usually-silent plumber.

Over the years many have suggested that Mario shouts "So long, eh Bowser," "So long, King Bowser," or other pejorative turns of the phrase that gained infamy online.

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 gaming platform, meaning that the question of what Mario says has been around longer than the Internet that has now received the answer.

As the best-selling and arguably most iconic video game franchise of all time, the Mario games have sold over 500 million units worldwide. The latest Mario adventure is Super Mario Odyssey, released for the Nintendo Switch platform in 2017.
