Three years after the release of Super Mario Party, Nintendo has announced the next entry in its party game series: Mario Party Superstars. While many were hoping for DLC for the previous game or an entirely new game, Superstars looks promising and appears to feature content and changes that players were hoping for after Super Mario Party.
This will be the subseries' twelfth home console title and, like recent Mario Party titles, is being developed by NDcube and published by Nintendo. Here's everything we know about Mario Party Superstars so far.
Mario Party Superstars Trailer
Mario Party Superstars was announced via a short trailer shown during Nintendo's E3 2021 Direct. In it, Nintendo revealed major elements of the game, such as its five boards from the Nintendo 64 games (including "Peach's Birthday Cake" from Mario Party and "Space Land" from Mario Party 2), 100 classic mini-games from throughout the series, button controls and online features.
Another trailer aired during the September 2021 Nintendo Direct revealing "Woody Woods" from Mario Party 3, "Yoshi's Tropical Island" from Mario Party and "Horror Land" from Mario Party 2 as the rest of the game's classic boards. It also revealed "Mt. Minigames," a mode that eliminates boards, allowing players to compete in just the mini-games. There's Survival mode, where players can compete online to achieve the longest win streak, and Tag Match, where they can work together. "Mt. Minigames" will have seven courses.
What We Know About Mario Party Superstars
Following the reveal trailer, Nintendo went more in-depth on the game during a 43 minute-long Treehouse Live segment. This showed off more gameplay as the panel played a game of Mario Party together on "Peach's Birthday Cake," revealing mini-games like "Boulder Ball," "Bowser's Big Blast" and "River Raiders" will return. The game will also feature special board events and new items. Significantly, Stars will now cost 20 coins instead of 10, making it more important to collect and save coins and addressing an issue many had with the previous game.
Other issues this game seems to be addressing are Super Mario Party's initial lack of online functionality and reliance on the Joy Con controllers. The first Mario Party for Switch had very limited online functionality until an update released in April of this year, something many fans thought was too little too late. As for the Joy Con, while they allowed for cool and unique features, they also meant that the game was next to impossible to play on the Nintendo Switch Lite.
While the full roster has yet to be announced, we do know from the trailer and the Treehouse that Mario Party Superstars will feature the return of Birdo, who hasn't been seen since Mario Party 9. It's unclear if we'll see more returning or new characters, though the fact that the Toads are hosting the game like they did in Super Mario Party indicated that Toad and Toadette will not be playable.
When Will Mario Party Superstars Release?
Mario Party Superstars will release for Nintendo Switch on October 29, 2021. As with most first-party Switch games, it will cost $59.99. The game is already available to preorder on the eShop, and the current space estimate is 4GB.
