Mario, Luigi & Co. get a little grim in ‘The Four Players’

Divergent and Snow White and the Huntsman screenwriter Evan Daugherty must have a deep affection for video games. YouTube channel Polaris has posted a short video series called The Four Players, written and directed by Daughtery and based on the four primary hero characters from Super Mario Bros.: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad. Referred to as The Fixer, The Addict, The Star and the Soldier (respectively), the videos present a much darker and realistic take on the plumber brothers and their Mushroom Kingdom compatriots.

While the videos are certainly darker in tone than the video games, Daughtery is incredibly clever with his usage of iconic items from Super Mario Bros. lore — everything from the Super Mushroom (used in The Fixer’s protein shake) to the Fire Flower (the basis of a drug for The Addict) and the Star (a regenerative source for The Star) make appearances in the videos along with a real-world explanation for the destructible brick blocks. Indeed, the references are so iconic that Daughtery doesn’t have to use any of the characters’ names throughout — it’s easy to tell who each video is supposed to be about.
