The film industry has been rocked by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and many creative projects have been scrapped, but others are still trying to carry on as best they can. A fresh take on the absurd and gritty post-apocalyptic world of Tank Girl, backed by Margot Robbie, has been put on hold indefinitely.

The movie will be directed by Dreamland's Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and produced by Robbie's company LuckyChap Entertainment. Both Robbie and Joris-Peyrafitte were interviewed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where they discussed the film's future. Robbie told Josh Horowitz, host of the podcast, that she's been a huge fan of the Tank Girl comics.

"They're just so...sick!," said Robbie. "It's amazing." Joris-Peyrafitte chimed in, describing the Tank Girl universe as "free and anarchistic[...], from the art, to the characters to the politics, to sort of the fragmented nature of the stories that they're telling."

The public was introduced to the punk-rock wasteland of Tank Girl in the 1982 comics created by Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin. It was then made into a film in 1995 directed by Rachel Talalay, starring Lori Petty and featuring Ice-T and Naomi Watts, which followed the protagonist through the post-apocalyptic desert on a mission to overthrow an evil resource-hoarding corporation.

As to whether or not the newest Tank Girl film was still on track, Joris-Peyrafitte explained that he and Robbie have been discussing it for a while, but with the precarious condition of the film industry in general, many elements of the project have been put on hold. Peyrafitte laughed as he speculated about the timeline of the movie, saying, "let's all look up when the world is not an actual trash-fire," but the project is not something they as a team are willing to give up on.

Asked how they've been adjusting professionally to the extra precautions in place due to the pandemic, Robbie said that on the business end, her production company has been "incredibly busy and very very productive" but as an actor "everything's been put on hold." However, Joris-Peyrafitte remains hopeful for the future of the film, saying, "it's too exciting to get into right now."

The Tank Girl comic book was previously turned into a movie in 1995. That adaptation starred Lori Petty as the titular character and was directed by Rachel Talalay.
