While the live-action film has been in development at Mattel for some time, Robbie was officially announced as the leading doll in 2019. Directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and co-written by Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach, Robbie has stated that the goal of Barbie is to subvert the audience's expectations.

"Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you're thinking, we're going to give you something totally different -- the thing you didn't know you wanted,'" she explained in a 2020 interview.

However, in another interview in 2021, the actor has also noted that there are certain challenges that come with adapting such an iconic character. "Right, it comes with a lot of baggage!” she said in a 2021 interview. "And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear Barbie and think,'I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't...'"

Robbie's Barbie will be accompanied by Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) as her long-time companion, Ken, who has been with Barbie since their debut in 1961. Will Ferrell also recently signed on to the film as "the CEO of a toy company that may or not be Mattel." Joining the cast in undisclosed roles are Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Ariana Greenblatt and America Ferrera.

Originally announced in 2015, the live-action Barbie film was originally intended to star Amy Schumer as a different take on the archetypal doll. When Schumer dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, the project moved on to Anne Hathaway, who also departed the project, before settling with Margot Robbie. Barbie began preproduction in 2019.

Co-written and directed by Gerwig, Barbie releases exclusively in theaters on July 21, 2023.
