Margot Robbie, the actress who played Harley Quinn in 2016's Suicide Squad, has confirmed she will star in the upcoming live-action Barbie film.

Academy Award-nominated producer and president of the newly created Mattel Films Robbie Brenner (Dallas Buyers Club) announced Robbie will not only star in the film as the titular character but also co-produce the project with her production company, LuckyChap. Although no plot details or release date have been revealed, the wealth of occupations and takes introduced for the Barbie doll over the years present the filmmakers with a number of options to explore.

The Barbie film has been in various stages of development hell for years, with potential stars approaching and subsequently dropping out of the project. However, the first feature film collaboration between film studio Warner Bros. Pictures and toy manufacturer Mattel finally has its star after several months on negotiations.

In a statement, Robbie said, "over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can’t imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen."
