Margot Robbie will star in a new Ocean's Eleven prequel movie.

As reported by THR, the Wolf of Wallstreet and Birds of Prey star has signed on to be the lead in the latest entry in Warner Bros.' Ocean's Eleven franchise. The new project is being helmed by Austin Powers and Meet the Fockers director Jay Roach, who previously worked with Robbie on 2019's Bombshell, which earned the Australian actress an Oscar nomination. Robbie and Roach will also produce the movie, alongside Tom Ackerly, the co-founder of her production company Lucky Chap, and Michelle Graham, an executive at Everyman Pictures.

The new film has not been officially greenlit by Warner Bros., but is said to be in active development and is planned to formally begin production sometime in 2023. The prequel will feature a script by Carrie Solomon. While details about the new story, including how it connects to the modern day entries in the franchise, are scarce, it is known that the new heist movie will be set in Europe during the 1960s.

The modern Ocean's Eleven franchise began in 2001 with a loose remake of the 1960 film of the same name, which starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The reboot, which was directed by Erin Brockovich's Steven Soderberg and cast George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as the new ringleaders of its eponymous gang of thieves, unexpectedly kicked off a franchise for Warner Bros., as the movie was successful enough to spawn two direct sequels and a spinoff. That spinoff, Ocean's 8, was released in 2018 and starred an all-female cast for its heist crew, which included Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway. The film was a commercial success, earning almost $300 million USD at the box office against a budget of $70 million.

While the new Ocean's Eleven movie will take Robbie back to the 1960s, her next starring role will see her slipping into the plastic shoes of '60s doll icon Barbie in Greta Gerwig's new film based on the toy line. Robbie will be joined by co-stars Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) and Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education), who will all play different versions of Barbie's boyfriend, Ken. The Australian actress will also appear in Asteroid City, a new ensemble romantic-comedy from The French Dispatch director Wes Anderson.
