Premiering Tuesday with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service, The Mandalorian will no doubt feel familiar to Star Wars fans even as it introduces them to new characters and settings. Set five years after the fall of the Empire, the series  focuses on a Mandalorian bounty hunter as he crisscrosses the galaxy searching for his latest mark while remaining out of the reach of the New Republic.

During a press conference in support of the series, three of the stars -- Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones), who plays the title character, Gina Carano (Deadpool), who plays Cara Dune, and Carl Weathers (Rocky), who plays Greef Carga -- discussed what it was like to become part of Star Wars mythology.

For Pascal it was putting on the Mandalorian’s helmet that first got him excited. “It fit perfectly,” he claimed. After that, seeing himself decked out in his costume and fully embodying his childhood dreams was an indelible moment. “You can’t see very well through the helmet but I got a pretty clear impression,” he said. "And if you grow up playing with Star Wars toys and obviously seeing these movies and then you’re staring at yourself and you are the image of that type of childhood imagination it’s a super pinch-me moment.”

Of the scope and scale of The Mandalorian’s production he added, “I’ve seen some pretty big sh*t. I haven’t seen anything like this.”

Putting on her costume for the first time was a special moment for Carano as well. “[It] was my first day on set [and] the whole costume [came] together and [creator, writer, and executive producer] Jon [Favreau] and [director and executive producer] Dave [Filoni] came and they made such a big deal out of it… And I was like ‘Wow! This is really great….’ But it really honestly was one of my favorite unforgettable moments. Being on set, seeing the other cast members whether be it behind a helmet or a creature…”

Meanwhile, Favreau wooed Weathers for his role and won him over with his enthusiasm for the project. “[Favreai] did sort of a slow roll on me. [He’s] like ‘I’ve got this thing that I want to talk to you about….’ When you walk into that… conference room and all this [Star Wars] art is on the walls and [Favreau] is so passionate about it all and it’s all magnificent. It’s some of the most beautiful artwork you could ever see…,” Weathers described.

“And then he started telling me basically what this was and about this character. And it’s like ‘Are you kidding me?’ I’m working on something that Disney is going to be behind, I’m working on something that Jon Favreau is marshaling through and I’m working on Star Wars… I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog and Nick Nolte. The series debuts Tuesday on Disney+.
