Disney+ is spiking the football over the recent trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3, which debuted during the NFL wildcard playoff game to record-breaking numbers online.

The upcoming third season of The Mandalorian has given Disney+ its most-watched Star Wars series trailer, according to THR. The clip reportedly registered 83.5 million views in its first 24 hours, which is, by far, the most for the franchise on the Disney+ platform. After being announced ahead of time, the trailer was made available online following its broadcast debut during the football game, providing it the momentum to top the previous Disney+ Star Wars record holder, Obi-Wan Kenobi, which pulled in 58 million views in its first 24 hours.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Story

The Mandalorian Season 3 trailer arrives four months after Disney+ dropped a teaser trailer, which featured footage that would be expanded upon in the new clip. The hit show's third season will take place after the events of The Book of Boba Fett which -- in an episode that detoured away from the show's titular bounty hunter -- saw Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) reunite with Grogu after their emotional Season 2 cliffhanger separation.

While Grogu was training with Luke Skywalker (created from a deep-faked Return of the Jedi-era Mark Hamill), at his unbuilt Jedi Temple on the planet Ossus, the youngling's bond with Djarin was too strong to continue the training, resulting in the two leaving together in a repurposed Naboo starfighter (as seen in The Phantom Menace). Thus, the duo were last seen heading to the planet Mandalore to restore Din's honor in order to become a proper Mandalorian again. As the Season 3 logline reads, "The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.”

The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ in Nov. 2019, and it became an instant hit for the streamer. Created by Jon Favreau, the show was the first (modern) live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, taking place five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi in the chaotic aftermath of the Empire's downfall. Upon its launch, the series followed a lone bounty hunter (Pascal) who goes on the run to protect the Force-sensitive child Grogu. The series was met with positive fan reaction and critical acclaim during the debut of its first season. The show was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, and it won seven Primetime Creative Arts Emmys.

Season 2 premiered on the streamer in Oct. 2020, following Djarin as he searched for other Mandalorians he believes can help find a Jedi, whom he seeks for the sake of Grogu. The second season continued the show's winning streak with fans and critics when it premiered on Disney+. After the sophomore season premiere, The Mandalorian became the first Disney+ series to make an appearance on Nielsen's top 10 list with a total of 1 billion minutes streamed in its first week on the platform. The show also snagged another Primetime Time Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.

The Mandalorian Season 3 hits Disney+ On March 1.
