Jon Favreau explained how the events in The Book of Boba Fett set the stage for the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian.

Speaking to Empire Online, the creator discussed why it was necessary to reunite protagonists Din Djarin and Grogu in a separate Star Wars series, stating that the creative team "couldn't just hit a hard reset," after the duo separated in The Mandalorian Season 2's finale. Favreau admitted that it's "going to be interesting to see how this unfolds for people who may not have seen The Book Of Boba Fett."

Many fans criticized The Book of Boba Fett for effectively abandoning the titular character for two episodes, focusing rather on Din Djarin and Grogu's continued adventures. The reunited team also lent a couple of hands in the series' fiery climax, arguably stealing a bit of thunder from Boba Fett himself. Favreau maintained that bringing them back together was the human thing to do: "You saw what Mando was like without Baby Yoda, and we saw what Grogu was like without the Mandalorian, and neither of them was doing too good." Reuniting them on another show "allowed time to pass" while maintaining the necessary relationship between the two.

Still, the time Grogu spent with Luke Skywalker, who whisked him away for Jedi training, was not for nothing Favreau insisted. He said that Grogu was given a choice, and he "chooses the emotional relationship and wants to be with the Mandalorian, and passing up Yoda's lightsaber. Part of you wants to see him develop in that way, and part the other."

The Book of Boba Fett focuses on the classic Star Wars bounty hunter who debuted in a cartoon segment in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special and rose to worldwide popularity after his appearance in The Empire Strikes Back. A second season has neither been confirmed nor denied. The show not only made time for Grogu and his unlikely substitute father but also for Ahsoka Tano, whose own limited series on Disney+ is expected to arrive in 2023.

The third season of The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+ on March 1. The Book of Boba Fett is also available in its entirety on the streaming service.
