Christopher Lloyd is adding Star Wars to the list of celebrated sci-fi franchises in his filmography with an appearance in Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

As the hit Disney+ series films its third season, Lloyd, whose most well-known role remains Doc Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy from the 1980s, has been added to the call sheet, according to THR. Details about the character he'll play as a guest star in The Mandalorian are not yet known.

Lloyd first won the hearts of sci-fi fans through his portrayal of Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, the excitable inventor from Back to the Future whose Delorean served as a time machine that could take him and his young friend, Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly, far into the past and future. After that iconic role, however, Lloyd stayed active in the film industry and even took on the Star Trek universe as the Klingon Commander Kruge in 1984's Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, making his entrance into Star Wars even more notable.

The 83-year-old actor has also appeared in numerous television shows and even received multiple Emmy awards. In 2021, he became the live-action version of Rick from Rick and Morty, and has stated that he could imagine fusing the adult animated series with the Back to the Future universe.

The Mandalorian was the first live-action Star Wars TV series to premiere on Disney's streaming service, Disney+. Set just after the events of the original Star Wars film trilogy, the show centers on Pedro Pascal's titular Mandalorian, Din Djarin. Although Din is a reclusive bounty hunter who has sworn never to uncover the face beneath his helmet, his life changes after rescuing a Force-sensitive baby alien, known as The Child until Season 2 revealed his name to be Grogu.

Season 1 of The Mandalorian premiered in November 2019 to great success and acclaim, with Season 2 following at the end of 2020. Disney+ has since greenlit numerous spinoffs, the first of which, The Book of Boba Fett, aired in December 2021 and included several episodes featuring Din Djarin and Grogu. The next Star Wars series coming up is Obi-Wan Kenobi, scheduled to premiere on May 25.
