Exploring a darker, grittier vision of the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian has been hailed for its more visibly lived-in environments and settings in direct comparison to the cleaner, glossier CGI environments. However, in a new behind-the-scenes featurette, creator Jon Favreau reveals a stunning detail about the Disney+ series' production: Much of the set was added in digitally rather than physically being present during filming.

Production on the live-action series utilized a ground-breaking virtual projection technology to map the set and digitally add in backgrounds during post-production to bring the lawless Outer Rim settings to visual life.

Developed by Lucasfilm's acclaimed special effects production company Industrial Light & Magic and Epic, the featurette shows visual effects usually employed to develop video game environments rendered for both outdoor and indoor settings to create the immersive worlds.

With principal photography already underway on the series' second season, it will be interesting to see what new worlds the eponymous bounty hunter will explore in The Mandalorian's future.
