WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 5, "Chapter 13: The Jedi," streaming now on Disney+.

Bounty hunter Din Djarin got a major upgrade to his defenses when the Armorer built him a literally shiny new suit of Beskar armor in The Mandalorian Season 1. It turns out Din's original gear was even more unrefined than many fans realized and borrowed elements from two unique types of stormtroopers previously depicted in live-action in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

In the newly released book The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian (Season One), character concept designer Brian Matyas breaks down the process that went into creating Din's look, revealing his pre-Beskar armor contains elements from the Shoretroopers and Death Troopers introduced in Rogue One. According to Matyas, he "started pilfering" the pieces of the Shoretrooper and Death Trooper armor that he liked while crafting Din's original outfit based on the in-universe explanation that these elements are rare, "So, if [Din] has a bounty where he kills one, it's like a trophy."

As seen in the above image from the book, Din's armor includes a repurposed right pauldron and shin guard from a Shoretrooper, along with a left pauldron from a Scout Trooper and thigh armor from a Death Trooper. The Shoretrooper pauldron includes flecks of telltale blue paint that make the connection all the more obvious once it's pointed out. In addition to the parts salvaged from Imperial troopers Din has killed, his original suit includes custom leather wrapped shin guards and knee plates that are inspired by a traditional Mandalorian armor design.

Din has had more than a few unfriendly encounters with stormtroopers of some kind since gaining his Beskar armor, between fighting off Moff Gideon's forces in The Mandalorian Season 1 finale and infiltrating the old Imperial base on Nevarro in the Season 2 episode "Chapter 12: The Siege." The relationship between the Galactic Empire and those in the Outer Rim where Din resides has always been hostile on the show, going back to the now-iconic Season 1 shot of bloody stormtrooper helmets atop spears in the ground. That being the case, one imagines Din wouldn't hesitate to steal the best parts of their armor after killing one or more of them on a job.

Ahsoka Tano presents Din Djarin with a beskar spear on The Mandalorian

Reclaiming Mandalore's culture has been a big part of Din's arc in The Mandalorian Season 2 so far, between him taking Boba Fett's armor from Cobb Vanth, assisting Bo-Katan Kryze and the Nite Owls in raiding Imperial cargo ships and acquiring Morgan Elsbeth's Beskar staff after Ahsoka Tano defeated her in combat. In doing so, Din has begun to build a new identity, leaving behind his old life as a bounty hunter who did whatever it took to get by. This makes his Beskar armor a good visual metaphor for his improved sense of self, much like his previous gear represented how he saw himself in the past.

That being said, Din is sure to encounter more Death Troopers when he inevitably crosses paths with Gideon and his growing army again in the future. He might not need to use their armor for his own protection anymore, but that doesn't mean he's above holding onto some scraps as souvenirs, if only for old time's sake.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, with guest stars Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Directors for the new season include Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Carl Weathers, Peyton Reed and Robert Rodriguez. New episodes arrive every Friday on Disney+.
