WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," streaming now on Disney+.

It'll be at least a year until fans of The Mandalorian get another fix, but audiences are already fretting about what the future holds for Din Djarin and Grogu, who parted ways at the end of the Season 2 finale. Luke Skywalker's surprise arrival aboard Moff Gideon's ship, and his vow to train the Force-sensitive child, resolved the main plotline of Seasons 1 and 2. This left the rest of the cast of characters in a state of flux that was only further complicated by a post-credits scene and the reveal of an upcoming project called The Book of Boba Fett. To make matters even more exciting, but confusing, Disney's Investors Day announcements brought news of 10 additional Star Wars shows, including two connected to The Mandalorian. So what's next for Mando -- and Cara Dune, Bo-Katan and Boba Fett? Here's where we left them, where we're likely to see them again and what they might be up to.

Cara Dune and Moff Gideon

Throughout The Mandalorian, Cara Dune's gone from shock trooper to mercenary to Marshal for the New Republic. Despite her distaste for politics and her survivalist tendencies, she's made it clear that -- for now -- she's operating on the up and up in service of the current government. To that end, in the Season 2 finale, she implored Grogu's crew of rescuers to keep Moff Gideon alive for questioning. After their exhilarating beskar spear-versus-Darksaber battle, Moff Gideon realized Din Djarin was going to let him live. And though he tried to off Grogu and himself before he could be taken in by Marshal Dune, Cara's well-placed punch prevented Gideon from succeeding on both accounts. Now, with Gideon prisoner, Cara has a means to avenge her home planet, Alderaan.

There's been speculation that Cara Dune will appear in or even be the primary protagonist of the recently announced spinoff series, Rangers of the New Republic, but Disney has been vague about the cast and story so far. Cara Dune actor Gina Carano's Twitter behavior has been a thorn in Disney's side, with some fans calling on the studio to write off the character in favor of more screen time for characters like Bo-Katan and Fennec Shand. However, with not one but four Mandalorian-related series soon to come, there's enough screen time to go around if Disney chooses to keep Carano on the payroll. Assuming it does, Cara Dune's story will likely continue to explore her newfound place in the New Republic hierarchy, regardless of which show she's on.

Moff Gideon is among the most shrewd of all Star Wars villains, and his previous involvement in the Great Purge of Mandalore makes him a perfect foil for both Din Djarin and Bo-Katan. So far, Gideon is functioning as the Imperial Remnant's more clever Darth Vader, sans mask, and it sure seems like his interest in Midichlorians and cloning is leading to some kind of Snoke/Palpatine tie-in. After losing possession of The Child and the Darksaber and falling into the New Republic's hands in the second season finale, it seems plausible he could be killed off in the Season 3 premiere. On the other hand, he could escape and become the big bad of the entire multi-series Mandalorian narrative.

Boba Fett and Fennec Shand

Boba Fett sat on his throne in Jabba's Palace in The Mandalorian

Immediately after the finale, there was concern among fans that The Book of Boba Fett might be taking the place of The Mandalorian Season 3, as it was believed the new season was supposed to premiere in December 2021, the exact month set for the premiere of The Book of Boba Fett. Disney kept the news of a Boba Fett series out of its Investors Day announcements to preserve the surprise, but this only added to the confusion. However, the studio has since confirmed the series are two separate projects.

We don't know for sure what part of Boba's story the new series will cover. It could flashback to his earlier career as a bounty hunter or it may chronicle his escape from the Sarlaac pit and his efforts to recover his armor. But judging by the second season finale's post-credits scene, in which Boba and Fennec assassinated Bib Fortuna and claimed Jabba's throne, either the upcoming Boba Fett project or The Mandalorian Season 3 will see Boba and Fennec ruling over the hive of scum and villainy that is Tatooine.

That doesn't preclude either character from getting tangled up in whatever quests Mando has ahead of him. However, now that Grogu is safe with Luke, their debt to Din Djarin has been paid. Plus, The Book of Boba Fett isn't explicitly a spinoff series, like Rebels of the New Republic or Ahsoka, so this could be the end of Din and Boba's alliance.

Din Djarin and Bo-Katan

Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan on The Mandalorian

When Luke left with Grogu, his father figure Mando wasn't the only one holding back tears. With his mission completed, it might seem like Din will now lose his sense of purpose. Except Moff Gideon's cruel parting gift -- the Darksaber -- is probably the new MacGuffin that will propel the action of Season 3. Bo-Katan was already somewhat in conflict with Din Djarin. She thinks he's a religious zealot and a Child of the Watch. He doubts she's a true Mandalorian. They needed each other throughout Season 2 and were able to put their relatively mild differences aside for their common interests. He wanted Grogu back, she wanted the Darksaber back and, for both of them, that meant facing off against Moff Gideon. When Din prevailed and tried to bestow the Darksaber upon her, though, Gideon gleefully explained that it must be won in honest to goodness combat.

This puts Din and Bo-Katan's partnership on unstable footing. In a storyline that's not totally dissimilar from the final season of Game of Thrones, Bo-Katan wants the power while Din Djarin has the rightful claim to it. He can renounce it all day long -- and thus far, Mando hasn't indicated he's at all interested in being either the savior or the ruler of Mandalore -- but for now, it belongs to him. How Din (and Grogu for that matter, who we're sure to see again at some point) eventually connects to pre-existing Star Wars canon like The Clone Wars or the Sequel Trilogy is yet to be determined, but fans can rest assured, there's still a satisfying Mandalorian story left to tell.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+.

The Book of Boba Fett arrives on Disney+ Dec. 2021.
