For the first two seasons of Jon Favreau's Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian, Din Djarin and Grogu's relationship is the core of the Disney+ series. The delicate nature of their relationship— protector and protected, old and young— provides most of the show's tension, especially because the two characters consistently swap roles. Of course, that reveals plenty of opportunities for simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking moments.

However, the constant challenge for the show's writers and actors is to effectively portray emotion with a man whose body is always concealed, and a mostly mute child. The entire crew managed to knock it out of the park, and these are just a few of the best moments between the Mandalorian and the Child.

10 Grogu Responding To His Name

Grogu Responding To His Name

Despite the mentality of a young child, Grogu is actually an estimated 50 years old. For the last 20 or so years of his life, he has lived in uncertainty after the fatal siege against the Jedi temple. This implies that, for the past two decades, Grogu has not heard his name spoken aloud. However, in episode 5 of season 2, Ahsoka shares with Din Djarin that the Child's given name is Grogu. Upon the Mandalorian speaking his name, Grogu immediately turns and coos.

The scene reveals more of Grogu as a character and further solidifies the relationship between the two characters. Throughout the remainder of the season, especially on the way to Tython, Grogu immediately pays attention to Din Djarin whenever his name is spoken.

9 Their First Meeting

Grogu And The Mandalorian Meet

A misleading mission to the planet Arvala-7 introduces both the Mandalorian and the audience to Grogu, a creature that belongs to the same species as Jedi Master Yoda. At the time, however, Grogu's true name is unknown, and the Mandalorian simply refers to him as "the kid" and, later, "the Child".

The initial meeting between the two characters is timeless: the silhouettes, the shadows, and the imagery of a quiet, introverted Mandalorian reaching out a finger to a seemingly helpless creature. Even better, in return, the creature grabs ahold of its would-be assassin.

8 Din Djarin Gives Grogu The Knob

With two mostly quiet characters, the show's visuals rely mainly on physical actions. A running visual gag throughout the series is Grogu constantly reaching for a lever's shiny silver ball on the Razor Crest. Eventually, after a few failed interventions, Din Djarin surrenders and offers the knob to the Child to keep. There are many theories as to why Grogu is fascinated with this ball; one fan theory, in particular, is that the ball is reminiscent of Jedi training methods.

Regardless of the reason why Grogu likes the silver sphere, the running gag solidifies the father-son relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu.

7 Grogu Saves Din Djarin From The Mudhorn

Grogu Lifts The Mudhorn

After the Mandalorian retrieves Grogu from the mercenary hideout, Grogu views the gunslinger as his protector. Upon leaving the hideout, the Mandalorian must face off against a lone mudhorn. This moment is when both Din Djarin and the audience are introduced to Grogu's powers. The creature, still a child, concentrates hard enough to use the Force and lift the mudhorn mid-stampede, thus sparing Din Djarin.

In episode 2, this moment is pivotal for many reasons. The mudhorn even ends up becoming Din Djarin's signet on his new beskar armor.

6 Din Djarin Asking Grogu "How Many Did You Eat?!"

Grogu Staring At Frog Eggs

Any parent or pet-owner will understand the challenge of keeping their ward away from undesirable food. While traveling with the Frog Lady, Din Djarin has two duties: safely drive the Razor Crest, and deter Grogu from eating the Frog Lady's eggs. However, his attempts are only slightly successful. He faces a similar situation with Grogu eating frogs in season 1 and stealing macaroons in season 2.

This moment in season 2's "The Passenger" episode makes the list primarily because of its sheer domesticity. It is a light-hearted moment in a rather grim situation.

5 They Try To Repair The Razor Crest

Grogu Tries To Find The Red Wire

For most of the series so far, the plot centers around Din Djarin attempting to understand Grogu and his world. However, for a brief moment in "The Siege", Grogu must try to understand Din Djarin's technology.

In another lighthearted moment in the series, the Mandalorian utilizes Grogu as a pint-sized technician. Despite the language barrier, Din Djarin patiently attempts to tell Grogu which wires to plug in aboard the Razor Crest ship. Who knew that the phrase "Show me the red wire" could be so sweet and so hilarious?

4 Grogu Using The Force When Din Djarin Encourages Him

Din Djarin would win the PTA award for "Best Parent" if there was such a thing. In episode 5 of season 2, Din Djarin and Jedi Ahsoka Tano collaborate in an attempt to convince Grogu to practice using the Force.

Ahsoka acknowledges that Grogu will listen to the Mandalorian before listening to anyone else, in part due to their shared and unbreakable bond. She suggests that Din Djarin attempt to convince Grogu to practice his powers. The silver ball from the Razor Crest works as the perfect ploy.

3 Din Djarin Putting Aside The Mandalorian/Jedi Rivalry

Ahsoka, Grogu, Mando and Luke Skywalker

This idea is not so much a specific scene as much as a series of little moments, all building up to a heartbreaking finale. As elaborated upon in Clone Wars, many Mandalorians hold a grudge against Jedi due to the Mandalorian-Jedi War. Whether right or wrong, it is a mentality that Din Djarin believes in when he is introduced.

Throughout the series, and especially in season 2, the audience watches him gradually cast this belief aside for the sake of Grogu. This transition is most clear when he works with Ahsoka, and he encourages Grogu to leave with Luke Skywalker.

2 Din Djarin Rescues Grogu From The Empire

Mando Aims At Stormtroopers

Throughout the series, Din Djarin and Grogu consistently swap roles between protector and protected. However, during the early days of their companionship, Din Djarin rescues Grogu from the Imperial remnant facility. This bold move goes as well as expected, and the Mandalorian finds himself exchanging shots with stormtroopers.

While this is not the only time that Din Djarin rescues Grogu from the Empire, it is still significant. This turn of events results in Din Djarin sacrificing his livelihood as a bounty hunter for Grogu, who was just supposed to be a job.

1 Din Djarin Removes His Helmet For Their Farewell

Grogu Sees Din Djarin's Face

Much of season 2 emphasizes the idea of questioning beliefs, whether religious, political, or somewhere in between. However, no one ever expected Din Djarin to break the code of the Children of the Watch, a sect that had separated itself from regular Mandalorian beliefs. The Children of the Watch believe that a Mandalorian should never remove his or her helmet in front of others.

In the last episode of season 2, simply titled "The Rescue", Din Djarin reveals his face to Grogu for the first time before the foundling leaves with Luke Skywalker.
