The first episode of the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian ended with a shocking twist when the title character's bounty was revealed to be an alien baby the same race as Jedi master Yoda. Now, series creator Jon Favreau has confirmed that this "asset" (as it is called) is important to the series' story.

"I wanted to surprise people," Favreau said of the big reveal, "and I wanted to -- well there are bigger arcs that go through the whole season and the whole throw of the show. So as fun as it is to reveal new characters and surprise them, it also fits into a larger narrative about what’s going on in the galaxy after the revolution, and this is an important character."

The second episode of The Mandalorian has just been released. Then, new episodes will hit the streaming service every Friday until the season finale airs Dec. 27. The only exception comes the week of release for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Rather than releasing Friday, The Mandalorian's penultimate episode will arrive Wednesday, Dec. 18.

Created by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog and Nick Nolte. The first episode is streaming now on Disney+.
