The following contains spoilers for "Endless Slaughter in the Infinite Swamp" from Crypt of Shadows #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Normally, Laura Kinney's Wolverine has a healing factor (the same one she shares with her father) that makes her one of Marvel's most unstoppable mutants, even capable of surviving within dangerous pocket realms like the Vault. It means she can overcome almost every major threat thrown her way -- however, under the right circumstances, her power can also turn into a very big flaw.

The story "Endless Slaughter in the Infinite Swamp" from Crypt of Shadows #1 (by Adam Warren, GURU-eFX, and VC's Travis Lanham) reveals that Man-Thing is quietly the ultimate counter to Laura. This supernatural character accidentally turns Wolverine's greatest strength into an infinite detriment that could cost her everything.

How Man-Thing and Wolverine's Powers Become Weaknesses

Halloween Wolverine Man-Thing Fight 2

Wolverine and Man-Thing find themselves meeting in the midst of a nameless crisis. In this possible timeline, Wolverine realizes too late she'd never been so close to Man-Thing. It turns out that all the scents that stem from Man-Thing's monstrous form inadvertently create a perfect replica of the "Trigger Scent". Making Laura smell the odor is an easy way to send her on an uncontrollable killing spree. It's something Laura has worked so hard to overcome, but the surprise pungency of the trigger scent activates her -- forcing her to hack away at Man-Thing.

Acting on instinct, Man-Thing responded in kind, attacking Laura and regenerating any damage she had done to his body. In turn, Laura also only relying on instinct kept fighting and healing herself, trying to kill the constantly regenerating Man-Thing. Each regeneration left them more and more inhuman. Laura's mind was eventually lost as her brain tissue regrew without the memories that defined her. The pair continued their battle in the Nexus of All Realities, lasting long after humans had gone extinct, always healing and killing. This carries on until the end of all time, as all remaining matter in the galaxy disintegrates into nothing.

Wolverine and Man-Thing Effectively Counter Each Other

Halloween Wolverine Man-Thing Fight 1

This story is a horrifying one, eternally locking away two of Marvel's defenders in a closed circuit of conflict that feels like a worst-case scenario for both. Wolverine in particular has worked hard to overcome the brutal edge forced onto her as a living weapon. Her humanity was earned, and to see it carved away inch by inch in this potential ending is heartbreaking. Likewise, this conflict suggests that Man-Thing will never be seen again as anything more than a monster to be killed, betraying the human elements that define the shambling creature. In this timeline, the two lose their humanity as a result of getting too close -- costing them the happy endings they could have had.

It's a tragic turn for the pair and a reminder of how even nominally unstoppable forces like Wolverine can be countered. Heroes like Man-Thing and Wolverine can usually bounce back from any injury or loss, but keeping them locked in an eternal battle turns their inability to fall into a deadly weakness. If forces like Orchis were able to discover this, they could easily try to replicate the Man-Thing's nominal immortality as the ultimate means of stopping one of the X-Men's best fighters and countering an otherwise potentially unstoppable killer.
