Man of Steel star Henry Cavill is in talks to return as Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

According to Deadline, Cavill's negotiations do not involve a sequel to Man of Steel. Warner Bros. reportedly plans to involve Cavill's Superman in another one of its upcoming projects. At the time of writing, it is unclear which film could feature his return. Warner Bros. declined to comment.

Warner Bros. has several announced projects in the works, including Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam film and the upcoming Shazam! and Aquaman sequels. Notably, Superman made a cameo appearance at the end of Shazam!, although his face was never shown and another actor wore the costume. However, details about Cavill's upcoming Superman appearance are being kept under wraps for now.

This news arrives just a week after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder announced his cut of Justice League will be released on HBO Max next year. Cavill himself was even present for the reveal.

Rumors of a Man of Steel sequel have circulated for years, with Cavill weighing in as recently as December last year. He has continually expressed his desire to continue the first film's storyline. However, Warner Bros. has not yet officially announced a sequel, though the character's new DCEU cameo could perhaps pave the way for one.

Cavill has filled the Big Blue Boy Scout's cape since Man of Steel released in 2013. He returned for Batman v Superman in 2016, which saw him face off against Ben Affleck's Batman. Despite Superman's death in that film, he brought the character back to life in 2017's Justice League. The theatrical cut of Justice League was completed by Joss Whedon after Snyder was forced to step away due to a family tragedy.
