In 2019, a story Marv Wolfman would refer to as his greatest Superman story ever would be published.  Man and Superman is a story that centers around Clark Kent, the man behind the cape. The story features a young Clark Kent trying to adapt to the world, hopefully finding his place in it before he puts on the costume that forever changes his life.

Originally written in 2006, this one-hundred-page special shows an even more human side of Clark than fans are used to. So much of what everyone assumes to be true about Superman is stripped away to give an honest look at the first and one of the best superheroes ever created.

10 Gets Conned Into A Bad Apartment

Man and Superman - Conned into an Apartment

Thankfully fairly accurate even to what it was like in 2006, Marv Wolfman understood what it meant to live in a large city in the modern era. Clark tried to find an apartment within his means and seemed to have found a nice, one-bedroom apartment in a safe area. But when he visited the area, he found out it was actually a slum and wound up only taking the apartment because it was all he could afford.

9 Becomes A Janitor

Man and Superman - Clark Kent A Janitor

Not long after trying out for the Metropolis Daily News, their main building is destroyed. It’s a major part of the storyline, as a terrorist organization is attacking random parts of Metropolis and threatening its leaders for money. With no other place to work, Clark takes the first job he can get and winds up working as a janitor, making his first friends in the city.

8 Clark Sneaks Into A Police Headquarters And Destroys Evidence

Man and Superman - Sneak into Police HQ

The same terrorist organization that blows up the Metropolis Daily News had already gained relevance by attacking other places in the city. Clark investigates one of the sites destroyed early in the comic book but does so when the cops show Lois Lane around the area.

Panicking about getting caught, Clark tosses the cops one of the explosive device’s remains to escape. Later, he realizes his actions led to his fingerprints being discovered on the device and sneaks into the police station to burn his fingerprints off. However, he ends up recorded by the security cameras there.

7 Sends His Super-Suit Back To Smallville

Man and Superman - Mails His Uniform Back

At the start of Clark’s career in Metropolis, he spends much of the comic trying to figure out how best to use his powers to help other people. His mom designs the uniform they planned on him using to do his job, but he can never find the right time to don the suit. He keeps making headlines for unintentional reasons, and eventually, the embarrassment leads to him mailing back his Superman uniform.

6 Doesn't Work For The Planet At First

Man and Superman - Metropolis Daily News

As mentioned in the comic's opening, Marv Wolfman suggests that Clark wouldn’t be able to get a job at his version of the Daily Planet. Most origins show the Planet as a newspaper that’s just barely making it, but Wolfman goes in a different direction. Instead, he casts the Planet as a paper on the New York Times level and points out accurately that someone who’s only written for the Smallville paper would never be able to score a job there at first. Instead, he starts working for the Daily News, a sensational newspaper.

5 Supposed To Be Set in the '90s

Man and Superman - Set in the 90s

Man and Superman have an interesting backstory in that the storyline was originally written and completed in 2006. Wolfman’s storyline was intended to be published in a comic known as Superman Confidential, a book set during Superman’s past.

One of the things mentioned in the opening is that though it was written in 2006, it was set ten years prior, explaining the heightened relevance of newspapers and the lack of having as many cell phones.

4 Lois Gets Him Hired At The Daily Planet

Man and Superman - Lois Lane Hook Up

Interestingly, it’s Lois who helps Clark get his job at the Daily Planet. When Clark realizes that Lex Luthor has some knowledge about the terrorists attacking Metropolis, he explains it to Lois, who pulls him in to share information. Eventually, she accepts that he’s talented enough to work at the Planet, though she challenges him to write a story that no one else could contribute.

3 Clark Kent Wears A Mask

Man and Superman - Superman Wears A Mask

Much of Superman’s origin story in every other story is about how Superman can’t wear a mask. There are all sorts of discussions about how Clark has to change his voice, posture, and everything about himself to keep people from recognizing his identity, specifically because he doesn’t think people can trust him if he wears a mask. In Man and Superman, Clark wears a mask for most comic, although true to form, most people tend not to trust him while he has it on.

2 Little Mention of Krypton

Man and Superman - No Krypton

One thing that’s kept to a minimum in Man and Superman is the presence of Krypton. Wolfman seems to be fine with the idea of most people being well-aware of how Superman got his powers. There’s no delving into what Kryptonian society is like here, only that Clark has special abilities and how best to use them going forward.

1 Gives Himself An Interview

Man and Superman - Clark Interviews Himself

Clark is allowed to get his work in front of the Daily Planet editor by Lois Lane after they discuss Lex Luthor’s attempt to turn the attacks on Metropolis into more publicity for making him look good. After Clark confronts Lex in his Superman outfit (that viewers never see), Clark finds a story that only he can tell—an interview with the “flying man” that’s been saving people in Metropolis. It’s a cheap way to get hired, but it works for him.
