Man of Steel Could Be Linked to Justice League, Zack Snyder Hints

Although Man of Steel director Zack Snyder said last year his Superman reboot wouldn’t tie into Warner Bros.’ long-promised Justice League film, his latest comments to the New York Post suggest the game plan may have changed.

The Post speculates Man of Steel will be used as a launching point for the DC Cinematic Universe, much in the same way Marvel’s Iron Man began the build-up to The Avengers.

“I don’t know how Justice League is going to be handled. Honestly, I don’t,” Snyder told the newspaper. “But The Man of Steel exists, and Superman is in it. I don’t know how you’d move forward without acknowledging that.”

When asked whether he’d had conversations about integrating Man of Steel into a larger cinematic tapestry, Snyder was cagy, but didn’t deny it outright.

“Um, how can I answer that? I can’t really say anything to that, because that’s a big spoiler,” he said. “I will say, yeah, they trust me to keep them on course.”

Snyder’s implication runs directly contrary to his definitive statement in 2011 that Man of Steel wouldn’t fit in with Justice League, much in the same way Christopher Nolan’s Batman is a self-contained story.

“Like what Chris Nolan is doing and what I’m doing with Superman, what they’ll do with Justice League will be its own thing with its own Batman and own Superman,” Snyder said at the time. “We’ll be over here with our movie and they’ll kinda get to do it twice, which is kinda cool.”

Written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan, Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick and Christopher Meloni as Col. Hardy. The film opens June 14, 2013.
