Man of Steel 2 is set to give Henry Cavill's Superman another solo movie, with the upcoming superhero film already being one of the most anticipated entries in the DC Universe. It will supposedly take the character in a more traditional direction, avoiding the darker characterization of the previous films, and there's one plot point from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that shouldn't be thrown out.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had Clark Kent posthumously proposing to Lois Lane, a subject only Zack Snyder's Justice League touched on. The decision would be to marry the two characters on-screen, but a better idea would be skipping that, having Man of Steel 2 begin with a post-nuptial Mr. and Mrs. Kent.

Superman and Lois Lane get married in Superman: The Wedding Album in DC Comics

The post-Crisis DC Comics continuity made a wise decision in marrying off Superman and Lois Lane, though it took its time doing so. The road to the aisle had all manner of pit stops, most notably Superman's death. A similar soap opera played out in the TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, with the later series Smallville doing the same thing without paying it off. Much as the old-school love triangle between Lois, Clark and Superman has become a trite archetype, so too has the wedding of these characters.

Since the '90s, most of Superman's comic adventures had him married to Lois. One major exception was the New 52 era, wherein Superman's marriage to Lois was retconned, and he was romantically paired with Wonder Woman. This move was heavily criticized by fans, and by the time of DC Rebirth, the previous status quo of Lois and Clark as a married couple was restored. It's also been the basis of the TV series Superman & Lois, showcasing just how well the premise has come to fit the character. Given all of these precedents, it'd be best if the DCU skipped to after Clark and Lois' wedding.

Man of Steel 2 Should Have a Married Clark Kent and Lois Lane

The best way to establish the passage of time is to show a picture of their wedding in the couple's Metropolis apartment. This simple bit of character development would go a long way, cementing the married status quo of Superman and Lois without spending too much time on the subject. The pomp and circumstance surrounding major characters getting married has become rather tired, even outside Superman, so going against the grain would be perfectly acceptable. It would also help to separate Man of Steel 2 from various Superman TV show adaptations, much like how Man of Steel avoided the generic cat and mouse of Lois wondering about Superman's secret identity.

The relationship between Cavill's Superman and Amy Adams' Lois Lane has been one of the highlights of the more controversial DCU films. With a lighter, more traditional tone for Superman, this relationship could shine even more brightly. All it has to do is avoid what's already been done with their romance, all the while emphasizing why Lois and Clark are one of the most iconic romances in all fiction.
