A sequel to Man of Steel, with Henry Cavill in mind as Superman, is actively searching for screenwriters.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and the heads of Warner Bros. Pictures, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, are extremely interested in seeing Cavill reprise his DC Extended Universe role as Superman. The project would effectively serve as a sequel to 2013's Man of Steel and be produced by Charles Roven. The film is actively searching for writers to pen the script. Mission: Impossible writer/director Christopher McQuarrie was apparently at the top of the list, though either Warner Bros. Discovery has not reached out to him or he is too busy with the next few installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Apparently, there were plans for Cavill's Superman to cameo in the upcoming Black Adam film, though DC Films president Walter Hamada turned down these plans when they were first brought up during reshoots. However, despite Hamada's "no," Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson turned to Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who approved the idea. The scene was apparently filmed in September 2022.

Warner Bros. Wants Man of Steel 2

Reports that Warner Bros. was considering bringing Cavill back to the DCEU began circulating in August, though those reports remained unconfirmed by the studio at the time. Many anticipated the actor would appear at 2022's San Diego Comic-Con, and his absence met with disappointment from fans. Johnson recently teased a potential cameo from the Last Son of Krypton in Black Adam, describing the hero as "the most powerful and unstoppable force on this planet." However, the actor then emphasized the phrase, "On this planet." Many fans believed this to be a reference to Superman.

Cavill has portrayed the Man of Steel in the DCEU since 2013's Man of Steel, and again in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Justice League in 2017 and Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021. The actor has been open about his desire to return to the DCEU, stating in a December 2021 interview that he still has his Superman suit and is "ready and waiting for the phone calls." In November 2021, Cavill claimed that he wasn't done with the Last Son of Krypton, believing that there was still "a lot more storytelling for [him] to do" as Superman.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Johnson as the titular anti-hero and arrives in theaters on Oct. 21, 2022.
