Great Scott! Police in Essex, England, cited a man for driving his DeLorean at 89 miles per hour, which should've been fast enough to propel him through time -- at least according to "Back to the Future."
However, the culprit wasn't Emmett "Doc" Brown, but rather Nigel Mills, who insists he wasn't attempting to go back to 1955, or even 1985. "I wasn't trying to time travel," the 55-year-old told The Guardian. "It was 11 a.m. on a Sunday, and the road was completely clear."
Mills said he purchased his rare vehicle for £22,000 -- a steal, as the car is known to sell for £30,000 or more -- because he's "a car fan, and me and the rest of my family enjoyed the 'Back to the Future' films. When I’m out in it a few people recognize it, they slow down and take pictures – drivers take pictures out of their windows or try to film you and I get approached at petrol stations."
Mills takes the DeLorean out a few times every year just to joyride. Thankfully for him, no time travel was necessary to beat the speeding charge: The two officers who pulled him over failed to appear in court, so his case was thrown out.
