In the first teaser for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, one of Disney's most iconic villains is back, and she looks more powerful than ever.
The sequel will see Angelina Jolie reprise her role as Maleficent, the evil fairy who originally appeared in Sleeping Beauty. After 2014's Maleficent showed how the once-noble fairy's descent into villainy began, her dark side should come into full bloom in the aptly-titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Picking up years after the first film, this dark fairy tale will continue to chronicle the events that turned Maleficent into a full-fledged villain as she tries to protect the magical creatures of the Moors using her assorted magical abilities
As the teaser shows, the film will also dig into the conflict between Maleficent and Michelle Pfeiffer's Queen Ingrith. The film will also see the return of Ellie Fanning's Princess Aurora, who famously becomes Sleeping Beauty thanks to Maleficent's curse.
While the film was initially scheduled to hit theaters in 2020, its release date was moved up, which led to some speculation that the film could debut on the Disney+ streaming service. However, Disney's title for the teaser confirms that the film will still be released in theaters. The film joins Disney's ambitious 2019 theatrical slate, which includes Aladdin, The Lion King and Toy Story 4, along with Marvel and Star Wars films.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Angelina Jolie, Ellie Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Jenn Murray, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple and Brenton Thwaites. The film is set to be released on Oct. 18, 2019.
