Featuring a popular student who's secretly a maid cafe employee, Maid Sama! is considered by many to be a modern classic among romance anime. Maid Sama! was one of the most well-known and well-regarded newer anime of the early 2010s, but this so far has not seen it continued.

The manga that the show was based on continued after the show's conclusion, but even this ample source material hasn't resulted in a Season 2 made for the show. Here's what Maid Sama! was all about, what happened to the manga and whether or not a new season could be on the horizon.

The Plot & Origin of Maid Sama!

The Maid Sama! anime was produced by J.C. Staff and premiered back in 2010, lasting for 26 episodes as well as an OVA special. The titular maid is Misaki Ayuzawa -- seemingly a perfect student who excels at everything she does. This makes her incredibly popular at school, although her sometimes no-nonsense attitude tends to rub potential suitors the wrong way.

Unbeknownst to everyone else, she works at a maid cafe in order to help pay the bills, and her somewhat embarrassing secret is soon discovered by classmate Takumi. He initially tries to use this knowledge against her and becomes a constant customer, but eventually, the two grow close and fall in love. This is complicated by Takumi's own past and secrets, which threaten to tear the couple apart.

The series adapted Hiro Fujiwara's LaLa magazine manga of the same name, which began its run back in 2005. There was more to the manga than what the anime got around to adapting, but despite this continued material, there's been no second season.

Will There Be a Season 2 of Maid Sama?

As mentioned, the anime came out in 2010, by which point, there were nine collected volumes of the manga. When the manga finally ended, there were nine more volumes left, but none of these latter stories were ever adapted. In fact, the anime only adapted until about the 32nd chapter of the manga.

Unfortunately, there's been no official word on whether or not J.C. Staff will ever continue the Maid Sama! anime and adapt the rest of the source material. This isn't helped by the fact that the anime series is now over ten years old, having completed its run in September 2010. While it's not uncommon for anime to receive further seasons after a long hiatus, a break of a decade's length is a stretch even for this trend. Moreover, the manga itself ended in 2013, so while the anime is still well-regarded among fans, it and the manga are far from being a huge presence in current otaku culture.

The show's first and so far only season can be streamed on both Hulu and Netflix, which is why the demand for a second season and the fanbase of the show in general still exists. A more likely situation would be that the anime is rebooted wholesale like Fruits Basket, starting from scratch with more modern animation to adapt the entirety of the manga. Either way, there's currently nothing to suggest that Maid Sama!'s anime will be continuing anytime soon.
