Despite several delays, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is still on the horizon, and a new clip teases Michael Fassbender returning as Magneto in that film.
The short clip, which was tweeted by the official X-Men Movies Twitter, shows Fassbender donning his iconic helmet and once again becoming the Master of Magnetism.
The film, which takes place a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, finds Magneto leading a community of mutant refugees on an island called Genosha. Jean Grey comes to the former villain for advice and guidance when the Phoenix Force abilities that manifest after a mission gone wrong threaten to endanger her teammates and the world at large. Erik disagrees with Professor Charles Xavier's method of dealing with Jean and her unpredictable powers and seemingly fractures the X-Men.
This new image follows one depicting a battered and bruised Lehnsherr seemingly alongside a new group of followers, including Storm, Nightcrawler and Beast.
In the comics, Magneto's helmet is symbolically important, as it prevents powerful telepaths such as Xavier from reading or taking control of his mind. In the movies, he acquired the helmet from his childhood nemesis, Sebastian Shaw, which he customized to fit his overall ensemble and agenda.
Written and directed by X-franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
