Wizards of the Coast, in conjunction with Penguin Random House, just released the newest addition to the lore of its popular card game, Magic: The Gathering. The e-book, titled Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths - Sundered Bond and written by Django Wexler, tells the story of the game's newest set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.
The story of the book centers around Lukka, a native to the monster world of Ikoria and citizen of the city of Drannith, a place where humans gather to fend off attacks from giant monsters. When Lukka discovers that he has the ability to "bond" with the monsters that attack his city, he gains a newfound sympathy for the creatures he's supposed to fight. However, such "bonds" are punishable by death in Drannith — making Lukka a criminal in his own city.

The book comes on the heels of the critically panned War of the Spark: Ravnica and its successor, War of the Spark: Forsaken, which was greeted with a lukewarm response after it infamously attempted to retcon the sexuality of one of the book's protagonists, Chandra. As a result, the game's publisher, Wizards of the Coast, released an official apology for the novel's poor handling of the subject and canceled plans for the book that was intended for the game's next set, Theros: Beyond Death.
