A Magic: The Gathering documentary, titled Igniting the Spark, The Story of Magic: The Gathering, is in the works. Coming over 25 years after the game was created by mathematics professor Richard Garfield, the documentary will go deep into the history of the game and its global popularity today.

"Magic: The Gathering is a classic success story, a homegrown game that came from nowhere and achieved world-wide success. It’s brought joy to millions of people and along the way completely transformed the game industry," a statement from co-directors Brian Stillman and Kelley Slagle read. "We can't wait to tell this story."

The planned documentary is not the first exploration into the culture and history of tabletop gaming for Slagle and Stillman. The two collaborated on Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons and Dragons. Igniting the Spark will join the catalogue of documentaries with similar topics produced by Seth Polansky and Brian Volk-Weiss of the Nacelle Company, who also produced the Netflix series, The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us. The film is also being co-produced by X-Ray Films and Cavegirl Productions.

Polansky views Igniting the Spark as a personal project. "I've played Magic: The Gathering since 1994. Now, 25 years later, I'm beyond thrilled to be able to give something back to the game and the community that has given me so much joy over the years," Polansky remarked. Vok-Weiss agreed and stated that the documentary "is sure to introduce the iconic game to a new audience while at the same time preserving its rich history."

Today the game has 38 million players across more than 70 countries, and earns an estimated $500 million a year for the IP's owner, Hasbro. News about Igniting the Spark comes not long after Netflix announced that the streaming giant is working on an animated Magic: The Gathering series produced by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame).
