Magic: The Gathering has unveiled Angelfire Ignition, the latest card to feature in the upcoming Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion.

Wizards of the Coast has provided CBR with an exclusive first look at Angelfire Ignition, a new rare Sorcery card. Players using this spell card will be able to place two +1/+1 counters on a target, but the fun doesn't end there. The buffed creature also gains vigilance, trample, lifelink, indestructible and haste until the end of the player's turn.

Players looking for a little more value in their Angelfire Ignition are in luck. Beyond the immediate creature buffs, the card also supports Flashback, meaning it can be cast from the graveyard for a slightly more expensive mana cost. Once this is done, Angelfire Ignition must be exiled. Players can expect to find both a regular version and an extended art version of the card, illustrated by long-time Magic: The Gathering artist Yeong-Hao Han.

In terms of flavor, dedicated Magic fans will no doubt notice some familiar elements in Angelfire Ignition. The card art depicts a mounted cathar, a holy warrior that used to serve the Church of Avacyn. Following the manipulation of Innistrad's leylines during Shadows Over Innistrad, the archangel Avacyn was slain by Sorin Markov. In Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, cathars are still present in the plane, despite their dismantled religion. Channeling angelic power, these warriors defend the people of their world from the rising swell of monsters.

Angelfire Ignition is just one of several new cards coming to Magic: The Gathering as a part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion. The game's latest set returns players to the spooky plane of Innistrad, populated by all kinds of gothic horror creatures. Werewolves stalk through towns while zombies shamble through the farmlands, all while dazzling angels keep a vigil through the clouds, intervening only when necessary.

Beyond the expansion's creepy setting, players can expect a host of new mechanics from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. Perhaps the most significant feature of the set, given its werewolf theme, is Daybound/Nightbound. Cards that support these keywords can trigger a change in the position of the sun if players meet certain criteria, resulting in some kind of transformation. As an example, the previously revealed Tovolar, Dire Overlord can switch the game from day to night if its player controls three or more wolves and/or werewolves; the transformation also applies to all human werewolves controlled by the player.

Beyond that, players can look forward to the Disturbed mechanic which allows players to cast a creature card from their graveyard for an altered mana cost. Disturbed is an extension of Flashback, which only applies to Instant and Sorcery spells.

Coven is a new keyword that triggers when three or more creatures with different powers are in play. Once this criterion is met, players can look at the top five cards of their library, revealing a Human creature that can then be moved to their hand. The remaining cards must then be placed randomly at the bottom of the library.

Lastly, Decayed cards are meant to reflect Innistrad's undead hordes. Any creature that sports the Decayed keyword can't block enemy attackers and must be sacrificed after they attack.

Angelfire Ignition, and the rest of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, are right around the corner. The upcoming expansion launches on Sept. 24, while the pre-release event is scheduled for Sept. 17. As for Magic: The Gathering Arena and Magic Online, the latest set releases on Sept. 16.
