Expected to run for six issues, The Magic Order marks Netflix's first venture into comic book publishing. The streaming service, which recently surpassed Disney to become the largest media company in the world, acquired Millarworld in August of last year with the intent for Millar to develop new intellectual properties for the platform. The publishing deal with Netflix came as part of the terms of the acquisition, reflecting Millar's lifelong love of comics.

Since its announcement, The Magic Order has become the bestselling Millarworld title, with advance orders coming in around 140,000 issues and outperforming Millar and artist Frank Quitely's Image Comics title Jupiter's Legacy. Millar hints the upcoming miniseries will be a stylistic cross between The Sopranos and Harry Potter as the five magical families take on an ancient evil threatening the Earth.

According to the series' official description,

We live in a world where we’ve never seen a monster and these people are the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Magic meets the mob in The Magic Order, as five families of magicians sworn to protect our world for generations must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day they live among us as our neighbors, friends and co-workers, but by night they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness...unless the darkness gets them first.

Mark Millar and Olivier Coipel's The Magic Order #1 debuts on June 13.
