Magic: Legends, the MMO action-RPG based on the expansive world of Magic: The Gathering, is shutting down this fall.

Announced by developer Cryptic Studios through the Magic: Legends blog, the game is closing its virtual doors on Oct. 31, 2021. The update confirms that players who spent any money on the game will be refunded in full. Servers will continue to function normally until the game shuts down but the in-game store, known as the Zen Shop, has already been terminated. Cryptic Studios did confirm that all items and cosmetics will now be purchasable using Magic: Legends free in-game currency, Aether. The game has only been available for three months.

"Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we got to bring the expansive Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to a wide audience and explore new angles within the established ARPG genre," reads the blog post. "We learned several valuable lessons along the way, and we will use them to improve Cryptic’s future development efforts."

Upon its announcement, Magic: Legends earned a great deal of attention. Cryptic Studios experienced great success with its previous titles Neverwinter, Star Trek Online and Champions Onlineleading many to believe the Magic: The Gathering inspired game would fair similarly.

While Cryptic Studios did not confirm a reason behind the closure of Magic: Legends, it's likely that dwindling player numbers resulted in its quick cancellation. Upon launch, players complained about excessive grinding and a variety of technical issues. Despite several hotfixes and balance patches, interest in the game remained low.

"Most importantly, we’d like to thank all of the players who explored the Multiverse with us and provided feedback during the Alpha and Beta testing phases. We couldn’t have gotten this far without you!" continues the post.
