Magic: The Gathering's newest expansion set is going to be a nostalgic one indeed. Time Spiral Remastered is geared towards veteran players during sessions of booster draft Limited, a tribute to the original Time Spiral block of 2006-7. Many complex tribes and archetypes are present, and that includes deck based on Fungus (Thallids) and Saprolings.

These two creature types often appear together, especially on sets based around the Dominaria plane. Together, these creature types never really made waves in Constructed formats, but they can form surprisingly powerful and synergistic decks in draft. Time Spiral Remastered players can cultivate the ultimate fungus army if they so choose.

The Green Cards of This Deck

The new preview cards make it clear that, while the Fungus/Saproling deck is not a terribly aggressive one, it does reward players for patiently and diligently cultivating their creatures. Many Fungus creatures may have spore counters placed on them, and these spores can be removed to make Saproling creature tokens.

Sporesower Thallid, for example, is a beefy 4/4 that will give each other Fungus a spore counter on the upkeep for free, and it can remove three such counters from itself to make a Saproling. Similarly, Utopia Mycon will give itself spore counters and remove three such counters to make a Saproling, and it can also sacrifice a Saproling to generate one mana of any color.

Some Elves are ready to help the player cultivate this army even faster, and beef up its creatures for combat. The legendary Thelon of Havenwood will give +1/+1 to all friendly Fugus creatures for each spore counter they have, and Thelon can pay BG and exile a Fungus from the graveyard to add a spore counter to each friendly Fungus. The cycle of life and death is strong with Thelon, a truly Golgari way to play the game. Thelonite Hermit, meanwhile, grants +1/+1 to those Saprolings, and can morph itself face up to make four 1/1 Saproling tokens to build a plant-based army all on its own.

The Black & Multicolored Cards of This Deck

mtg cards

The Fungus/Saproling deck is primarily green, but black cards can contribute greatly to this deck, and not just for black's plethora of good removal spells. Deathspore Thallid is a small Zombie Fungus that has the usual spore counter/Saproling effect, but it can also sacrifice a Saproling to give another creature -1/-1, either to pick off an X/1 creature or weaken a large enemy creature in combat so a larger Fungus can finish it off.

Then there's Dread Return, which can bring back a large Fungus or Elf from the graveyard to the hand, such as if the opponent gets rid of Sporesower Thallid somehow. The flashback cost demands three creature sacrifices rather than mana, which is perfect for a go-wide token generator deck like this one. There should be plenty of disposable 1/1 Saproling tokens on hand to fuel Dread Return.

Slimefoot, the Stowaway is a legendary multicolored addition to the deck that can make a Saproling for {4}, a fine mana sink for the mid to late-game -- but that's not all. Slimefoot can also deal damage to opponents and gain some life when a friendly Saproling dies, such as when they are sacrificed to Deathspore Thallid or Dread Return's flashback cost. Together, green and black mana are masters of the cycle of life and death, with living things rotting away and their fetid remains fueling new life.
