Magic: The Gathering's newest expansion set is Kaldheim, and early preview cards are making it clear that this set packs a tribal component alongside new mechanics like Foretell and Boast. Many Kaldheim cards are tailored for a particular tribe or two-color draft archetype, but other cards are more flexible.

Every set needs all-purpose cards so players aren't restricted too harshly when drafting. The newest Kaldheim spoilers include a few cards that can work with just about any tribe that needs them. Such cards have existed before, but they didn't have Kaldheim flavor like these do.

Kaldheim: The Haven & The Nexus

These two cards are found in the rare slot, and crafty players can pick them up during games of booster draft Limited to power up their tribal deck while denying this much-needed flexibility to everyone else in the pod. Faceless Haven is like Kaldheim's version of Mutavault, a classic "man-land" from Morningtide that can become a 2/2 with all creature types for a payment of {1}. In the frosty world of Kaldheim, this costs three snow mana to activate, which is indeed a steeper cost than {1}.

In exchange, Faceless Haven becomes a real powerhouse, morphing into a 4/3 creature with vigilance that has all creature types until end of turn. Otherwise, it can tap for one colorless mana like Mutavault does. Paying three snow mana isn't terribly difficult in a set like this, where snow-covered basic lands and a mega-cycle of common snow dual lands can be found. Some creatures in this set can tap to untap a snow land, making Faceless Haven even easier to use. Any draft player should find it rather easy to get Faceless Haven online.

The other flexible tribal card is Maskwood Nexus, an artifact that costs {4}. Recently, Wizards of the Coast has been printing more colored artifact cards to avoid the problem of colorless artifacts disrupting the color pie, but given how universal Maskwood Nexus can be, it simply had to be colorless. This artifact will grant all controlled creatures every creature type in the game, and it will do that for controlled creature spells and creature cards that aren't on the battlefield.

Maskwood maintains strong tribal synergy, and it even enables "when you cast a [insert creature type] spell" effects, such as "whenever you play an Elf spell." That can really fuel a tribal deck. Maskwood Nexus can also pay {3} and tap to make a 2/2 blue Shapeshifter creature token with Changeling. That's a fine way to stock up the player's board state, and it's a decent mana sink later in the game.

Using These Cards in Kaldheim Tribal Decks

A card like Faceless Haven is great because it can fit into any deck that has access to snow mana. As for tribes, Faceless Haven seamlessly fits into any deck to serve as a 4/3 beater with vigilance. If so desired, it can slot into the Elf tribe to add some extra muscle and benefit from Elf tribal effects. Elvish Warmaster, for example, will grant Faceless Haven its +2/+2 and deathtouch bonus, since Elf is most certainly a creature type that the Haven can imitate.

The Haven could also fit into a white-red Dwarf deck and tap for Magda, Brazen Outlaw's ability after combat. Faceless Haven has vigilance, so it can become a creature, attack, then tap to crew a vehicle just for the sake of making a Treasure token via Magda. Or, it can crew a vehicle comfortably with its four power.

Maskwood Nexus can bring several tribes together, since it grants all creature types to all friendly creatures. Now, everyone is a shapeshifter, and the only limit is the colors in the player's mana base. Imagine Elvish Warmaster, Valkyrie Harbinger and Magda all in a Naya-colored deck, with Maskwood Nexus uniting them.

Valkyrie Harbinger now counts as a Dwarf too, so when it attacks, it will allow Magda to make a Treasure token. Or, Elvish Warmaster can grant +2/+2 and deathtouch to the Valkyrie and Magda, since they now count as Elves, among other creature types. If a draft player can't easily assemble a regular tribal deck, they can grab Maskwood Nexus and make one out of many disparate parts. The tree of masks truly brings everyone together into a universal tribe of changelings.
