In Magic: The Gathering's Core Set 2021, Green and White mana are drawing cards in a whole new way.

The Magic color pie strictly defines what each color can and cannot easily do in the game; otherwise, the colors would blend together too much and lose their unique identities. Blue mana, from the very start, has been about planning and intellect, and this often reflects in rigorous card draw and scrying. Black mana draws extra cards with a "power at a price" theme, while Red can recklessly loot for cards with Wheel of Fortune effects. Green and White are now finally catching up.

Healing The Mind

Historically, White mana is the weakest color for drawing extra cards, except when it is paired with Blue (such as Sphinx's Revelation). White mana is capable of "go wide" aggression with Soldiers and Knights, and the same is true in Core Set 2021. But this time, the clerics and soldiers are healing the mind, not just their bodies.

Perhaps it's an effort to speed up the game and make it smoother, but Wizards of the Coast is making sure that even mono-White decks can draw cards smoothly. Revitalize and Defiant Strike are thematically White, cheap and common, and they both cantrip. This isn't groundbreaking, but having two in a Core Set is a big step.

But the real card-drawing power in White comes with Mangara, the Diplomat. It's a legendary Cleric that may not draw cards as easily as Blue Wizards, but it does watch closely for enemy hostility. White mana often punishes enemy aggression, and Mangara is doing so with card draw rather than Destroy Target Attacking Creature effects. Just two incoming attackers is enough for Mangara to grant its controller a card, and if an opponent is casting more than one spell per turn, that's another card. No doubt Mangara will be a card-drawing machine in any Core Set 2021 sealed pool or booster draft game, and it may be a solid Commander for casual mono-White builds.

Nature's Wisdom

Green mana is the second-weakest color for card draw, though it does have ways to generate card advantage, such as the famed Eternal Witness. In Core Set 2021, Green mana has more card draw power and synergy with such effects than ever before. Green is practically rivaling Blue and Black in this set, proving that its planeswalkers aren't forest brutes; they are wise and closely attuned to nature. More than one Green card in Core Set 2021 allows the player to draw cards, often in a Green flavor. Track Down digs deep with scry 3, and the player can then draw a card if it's a creature or a land, which are Green's favorite things. That's a lot for just 1G at sorcery speed.

Remarkably, Green cards also care about card draw, which is new ground for this color. Like Blue, Green now gives the player benefits from triggered abilities that look out for card draw, such as Burlfist Oak. Of course, the benefits are Green-themed, such as getting a power/toughness boost or caring about how high a creature's power is. Blue's triggered abilities often tap creatures or bounce permanents; Green would rather coat a boast in wooden armor and make it tougher whenever cards are being drawn.

Overall, this revitalized card drawing allows Green and White decks to operate faster and more smoothly, while still being true to what they've been about all along.
