WARNING: The following contains spoilers from Maestro: War & Pax #5, by Peter David, Javier Pina, Jesus Aburtov & VC's Travis Lanham, on sale now.

When the world of "Future Imperfect" first debuted in 1992, the dystopia was a desolate wasteland filled mainly with an evil warlord version of the Hulk known as Maestro and his helpless human subjects. But now that the world is receiving more focus than ever in a number of miniseries focusing on the future Hulk, it seems that more and more super-powered survivors from the present survived the nuclear apocalypse that devastated the world.

The final pages of Maestro: War & Pax #5 reveal there are two more survivors set to appear in the upcoming Maestro: World War M miniseries. And given just how strong the two are, their inevitable clash with the irradiated regent will only further push the green-skinned tyrant to his limits.

The first survivor emerged from the wreckage of the A.I.M. facility that once held Maestro prisoner. A green fist punched through the rubble and from underneath emerged the Abomination, a gamma-irradiated reptilian creature who has consistently proven to be one of the Hulk's strongest foes.

Originally known as Emil Blonsky, the Hulk villain became much like the Hulk himself after exposure to gamma radiation. Growing into a monstrous green form, Abomination maintained control of his human personality from the start whereas the Hulk only gained his through the merging of his multiple personalities. In the Future Imperfect timeline those personalities eventually developed into the megalomaniacal Maestro, but up until now there has been little word as to the Abomination's fate. Given his presence in the A.I.M. base it is likely that, like Hulk, he was contained for study to better understand his immunity to the dangers of radiation.

Although his presence would present enough of a challenge, the Abomination does not appear to be the only survivor who will no doubt soon challenge the reign of the future Hulk. A final teaser page promises the return of Namor, the Sub-Mariner, one of Marvel's oldest characters who developed an anti-heroic reputation quite similar to the Hulk's during the Silver Age of comics. The mutant Atlantean's strength has also been frequently shown to rival the Hulk's, and in combination with the Abomination the two could prove to be quite the match for Maestro who has thus far proved too powerful for A.I.M., Hercules, the Pantheon, and even Doctor Doom.

Namor Future Imperfect

So far, the superpowered survivors of the "Future Imperfect" world have only been those whose bodies house immense power, such as Hercules or Abomination, or those with a vast intellect, such as M.O.D.O.K. or Doom. While there would seem to be something special about the exclusivity of the survivors, this theory becomes increasingly diluted as the list grows. When Maestro was the sole superhuman survivor of the apocalypse it made him seem one of a kind. Now he is joined by nearly a dozen others, and the list just keeps growing.

Narratively it is understandable, as a prequel series needs to have characters strong enough to provide a challenge for Maestro. Setting aside such questions and embracing the Maestro miniseries have created several memorable final match-ups between the Hulk and Marvel's other powerhouses, and that tradition seems set to continue in the upcoming series.
