Award-winning director Jonas Åkerlund will adapt the Polar: Came With The Cold graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics, based on a screenplay by Jayson Rothwell. Åkerlund's previous directing experience includes Lords of Chaos, Spun, and Lady Gaga's Telephone video.

Polar will be produced by Robert Kulzer (Resident Evil), Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil, Death Race), Dark Horse Entertainment's Mike Richardson (Hellboy, Dark Matter), and Keith Goldberg (Umbrella Academy, The Legend of Tarzan). Martin Moszkowicz will executive produce.

Mikkelsen will take on the role of Duncan Vizla aka the Black Kaiser, the world's top assassin. When he expresses his desire to retire from the business, his former employer marks him as a liability to his firm. Vizla finds himself hunted by an army of younger and more ruthless killers, unwillingly thrusting him back into the game. Having no choice but to return to the shadowy life he thought he'd left behind, he must use his arsenal of deadly skills to outsmart his enemies, protect an innocent woman and redeem what's left of his tormented soul.

”Mads Mikkelsen was born to play the world’s best assassin," Bolt said in a statement. "He is totally believable as the Black Kaiser in Polar and Jonas’ unique, vibrant but grounded and darkly comic style will set Polar apart as an unforgettable tale.”
