Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an anime that tells the story of a girl named Madoka who gets offered a deal to join her friends and become a magical girl. The magical girls can get any wish that they want granted to them, but there is a high price to pay and magical girls often regret making the trade.

Another girl, Homura, tries to stop Madoka throughout the series. By the end of the anime, Madoka and the fans learn that Homura was from another timeline in which Madoka already became a magical girl and saved Homura's life. The two became best friends, and when Madoka's life was in danger, Homura made a wish to be able to go back in time and save her as many times as it would take. But because Homura had to become a magical girl in order to make that wish, these ten things ruined her life.

10 She Was Trapped In A Time Loop

When Homura first made her wish, she didn't expect to have to go back in time as much as she did. Unfortunately, she repeated the same month countless times. She had to meet the same people and learn the same things at school for what could possibly be years.

With very little changing between each timeline she went through, it was hard for her to have the same experiences repeated.

9 She Had To Witness Her Worst Nightmare Many Times

Madoka And Homura

The worst thing about continuously going back in time was being unable to save Madoka. The first time she went back, she thought she'd undo Madoka's fate. Instead, she learned the truth about magical girls, that once they died, they turned into witches.

She tried to warn the others, but it didn't matter. No matter how many chances she had, she couldn't save her friend and kept on having to witness Madoka's death over again.

8 Everyone Forgot About Her

Because none of the other magical girls knew about Homura's wish, they had no idea that they had met her many times before. Homura had to introduce herself over and over again, reestablishing her relationships, especially with Madoka.

This was very hard, especially since she knew the terrible things that had yet to come and couldn't let them know everything. As she learned more about them, they didn't know anything about her.

7 Her Personality Drastically Changed

Homura

In the first few timelines that Homura lived in, she was a sweet and innocent girl. However, as she continued going back in time and failed at her goal of saving Madoka, she became colder and distant. By the time Madoka met her in the timeline that most of the anime takes place in, Homura seemed to be mean.

She didn't get along with the other magical girls and didn't care about what happened to anyone except for Madoka.

6 She Had To Fight Witches

After getting their wish granted, it was a magical girl's duty to fight witches, especially since horrible things could happen if they didn't. However, fighting against a witch is hard and it's not something that anyone would immediately get used to, especially a child.

Homura had to risk getting hurt, and possibly even her life, many times. Luckily, she became stronger every time she went back in time, so at least one good thing happened.

5 She Couldn't Become A Witch

Homura after she rewrites the universe

In a timeline where all of the girls learned that they would become witches, Mami killed Kyoko and almost killed Homura before Madoka killed her. As the two surviving magical girls had to fight Walpurgisnacht, the witch that kept defeating Madoka, on their own, their chances of beating it were even worse.

As they died, they had one last conversation. Homura told Madoka that they'd become witches and destroy all of the evil in the world together. Instead, Madoka was able to save her life, causing her to go back in time yet again.

4 Her Soul Was No Longer In Her Body

Kyubey Madoka Magica

When the girls make a deal with Kyubey, the creature that turns them into magical girls in exchange for making their wish come true, it puts their soul into a gem. Because of this, their bodies don't work the way they're supposed to. If a magical girl's soul gem is too far away from her body, she shuts down and can die. Though this is terrible, especially since Kyubey didn't tell them before making the deal, it also allows them to heal much quicker when fighting witches.

Nevertheless, Homura and the others had to be extra careful with their soul gems, and compared themselves to the undead when finding out the truth.

3 She Turned Madoka Into The Most Powerful Magical Girl

Without meaning to, Homura was actually responsible for Kyubey wanting to turn Madoka into a magical girl. Due to Madoka being the center of many timelines, her potential to be the most powerful magical girl and witch increased.

Kyubey didn't know why her potential was so high until learning about the deal Homura made. With Kyubey wanting Madoka to be a magical girl, she kept becoming one, causing Homura to go back in time over again. Her wish created the curse she lived in.

2 She Is The Only Person That Remembers Madoka

At the end of the anime, Madoka learned about everything that Homura went through for her. Since she hadn't made a wish in this timeline, Madoka used it to become a goddess and create a new universe. Everyone in this new universe forgot about Madoka's existence.

Even her friends and family couldn't remember her. The only person that could was Homura. If anyone was in her place, they'd feel sad and lonely, as if someone they cared about passed away and no one around them could understand the pain.

1 Her Wish Didn't Come True

Madoka Anime

The reason why girls make a deal with Kyubey is so their wish will come true. However, in Homura's case, everything she had gone through was pointless once Madoka saved her from going back in time. Though she did it to save Homura, Madoka also caused her friend to not get what she wanted.

All of Homura's pain and suffering wasn't worth it and only ruined her life.
