A new batch of photos from the set of Sony Pictures' upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film Madame Web see lead actor Dakota Johnson sporting a new hairstyle for her role as the eponymous Marvel character.Shared to Twitter, the photos in question feature Johnson on the set of Madame Web in Boston. While the actor is seen wearing a hooded poncho, her curled, white hair is clearly visible, suggesting that she is indeed in-costume as the mysterious Madame Web herself.
While it has long been known that Johnson would star as Madame Web in the character's upcoming solo film, a lingering question has been which version of the character she will actually be playing. The fact that Johnson is apparently sporting white hair for the film would suggest that she is playing the original Madame Web, Cassandra Webb, as opposed to her successor, Julia Carpenter. That said, a previously-surfaced set video featured Johnson rocking a Julia Carpenter-esque red jacket.
Sony's Madame Web Arrives in 2024
A clairvoyant and a prominent supporting member of Marvel's Spider-Man mythos, Cassandra Webb/Madame Web was created by Dennis O'Neil and John Romita Jr., first appearing in 1980's Amazing Spider-Man #210. The mantle of Madame Web was eventually taken up by Julia Carpenter, who herself initially debuted in Marvel's original Secret Wars series as the second Spider-Woman.
Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Sony's Madame Web began production in Boston this past July. The film was initially slated for release on July 7, 2023 before being pushed back to Oct. 6, 2023 and again to Feb. 16, 2024. In addition to Johnson as the title character, Madame Web stars Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott and Zosia Mamet. While all of Johnson's co-stars' roles are being kept under wraps for the time being, Scott is rumored to be portraying Peter Parker/Spider-Man's beloved uncle, Ben Parker.
Madame Web is currently expected to debut as the sixth entry in Sony's line of live-action Marvel spinoff films focusing on Spider-Man's adversaries and supporting characters. The Tom Hardy-led Venom kicked things off in 2018, with its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, following suit in 2021. Jared Leto's Morbius arrived in theaters earlier this year. Next up is Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, which is scheduled for release on Oct. 6, 2023. El Muerto, starring rapper and former WWE 24/7 Champion Bad Bunny, will then bow on Jan. 12, 2024.
Madame Web releases in theaters on Feb. 16, 2024.
