What Is Madame Web?

Created by Denny O'Neil and John Romita Jr., Cassandra Webb/Madame Web first appeared in 1980's Amazing Spider-Man #210. The character has psychic abilities and, in the comics, has served as something of an ally to Peter Parker/Spider-Man. In the film, she'll be played by Dakota Johnson.

Plot details regarding Madame Web are scare at this time. There have been rumors that the movie is actually a cover for an entirely different Spider-Man project, though those are unsubstantiated at the time of writing. There are also reports that Madame Web is meant to be Sony's answer to Doctor Strange. Recently, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps and Adam Scott joined the film. However, it's not clear at this time just what roles they're meant to be playing.

Madame Web is one of several movies currently slated to be part of Sony's Universe of Spider-Man films. That franchise began in 2018 with Venom, which proved a commercial success despite less-than-stellar reviews. A sequel materialized in 2021, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and the first movie not focused on Eddie Brock, Morbius, released in 2022 to negative critical reviews and a poor performance at the box office. Despite what happened with Morbius, Sony still plans to release a Kraven the Hunter movie starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role on Jan. 13, 2023, as well as an El Muerto movie starring Bad Bunny on Jan. 12, 2024. A sequel to Venom: Let There Be Carnage is also currently in the works. That project does not have a release date at the time of writing.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson from a script by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, Madame Web is set to release on Oct. 6, 2023 after having previously been scheduled for July 8 of that same year.
