Sony's upcoming Madame Web film will reportedly introduce Spider-Girl and Spider-Woman.

As reported by The Cosmic Circus, the Spider-Man spinoff film will feature Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon/Spider-Girl and Celeste O'Connor as Mattie Franklin. While it's unclear if Mattie Franklin will appear as Spider-Woman in Madame Web, the character has previously taken up the mantle in the comics.

Production on Madame Web recently began in Boston, with filming set to take place between July and October 2022. Along with this news, it was reported that Adam Scott would appear in the film as Uncle Ben, while Dakota Johnson will portray Cassandra Web/Madame Web. Sydney Sweeney will reportedly portray Julia Carpenter, another character who has taken on the mantle of both Spider-Woman and Madame Web.

Created by Joe Quesada, Fiona Avery and Mark Brooks, Anya Corazon made her Marvel Comics debut in Amazing Fantasy #1 in 2004. While she made her first appearance under the name Araña, the character would go on to be introduced as Spider-Girl in 2010's Young Allies #5. Mattie Franklin, on the other hand, was created by John Byrne and Rafael Kayanan. The character made her first full appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #441 in 1998, though she wouldn't fully debut as Spider-Woman until The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 2 #5 in 1999.

Cassandra Webb, aka Madame Web, made her Marvel Comics debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in 1980, written by Denny O'Neil and John Romita Jr. As a mutant, Cassandra's abilities range from telepathy to clairvoyance, though she suffers from myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease that left her blind, paralyzed and on life support. Despite her condition, she was also to use her abilities as a medium to help heroes like Spider-Man and, before her death, transferred her power to Julia Carpenter, who was the second incarnation of Spider-Woman and, subsequently, the second Madame Web. The character has also been used in other media to unite Spider-People from other worlds.

Sony Pictures' franchise of live-action Marvel spinoffs centered around Spider-Man villains began with 2018's Venom, with the most recent installment being Morbius and Kraven the Hunter currently in production. Sony added two "Untitled Sony/Marvel Universe" films to its 2023 release schedule, which were expected to release in theaters on June 23, 2023, and Oct. 6, 2023, respectively. However, the studio recently dropped the spinoff meant for June 2023 from its calendar. A reason for its removal has not been confirmed.

Madame Web does not yet have a release date.
